ABOUT OUR FOOTWEAR

Who makes your shoes?

Women artisans in Morocco, paid a fair wage, hand make each and every one of our high-quality shoes. Many of the women are widowed or divorced, and use the work of making stunning raffia shoes to be a part of a community, as well as make a wage for themselves to be independent.

What oversight do you have over your supply chain?

We work with local coordinators in Morocco who have been audited to ensure they have ethical sourcing practices and stand by supporting artisans in Morocco fairly. Our coordinators also refuse to work with foreign retailers who will not abide by paying their people adequately. We work with people who believe in the value of craftsmanship and the people behind the products they export.

Additionally, we make at least 1 trip annually to visit our sourcing partners in Morocco. We plan our trips around the holidays that artisans take off, the lunches they have at home, and any other work/life needs we need to because we aim to respect the people we work with.

What exactly is raffia made of?

Raffia is a natural fiber made from palm trees, but sliced more thinly than the traditional palm goods you’ll find, such as handbags and furniture.

What are your shoe soles made from?

Our shoe soles are made from scrap cow leather. Every shoe’s leather will look a bit different, as it is distressed, untreated, and chemical-free.

Where are your products made & sourced from?

All of Proud Mary Footwear's products are made in Morocco. Women artisans make the raffia upper.

The raffia used in making the shoes is sourced from Madagascar and the leather sole is sourced from Europe.

Why are your products expensive?

All of our products are handmade by one or more women and are made in small batches. The women who make our products are paid fairly and the workshop we work with offers regular time off. We are a small company with limited edition products, all of which are made individually by hand, so do not benefit from economies of scale from large volume orders. All of these things make our products ethical, and unique, but they do not make them cheap!

We do not source inexpensive shoes from the outset and we know that to make a serious impact, we need to scale—providing a ton of work to the artisans who make our shoes. Scaling in large quantities means sharing our sales with business partners (other retailers) and uplifting them in our process as well. We sell a high-quality product that impacts the women who make them, the coordinators we purchase from, us, and the small retailers we work with. We have priced our shoes as low as we can to keep these goals in mind.
